How to Fix a Zipper That Keeps Opening

We've all been there: you're just about to walk out of the house in an great white dress when you realize you've got foundation all around the collar.

You panic (we get it), but you shouldn't because there's always a fix.

Dana Avidan Cohn, executive style director at PopSugar, and Kahlana Barfield Brown, fashion editor at InStyle magazine, stopped by TODAY Wednesday to show us their best tricks to fix those annoying wardrobe malfunctions that would normally ruin your day ... or at least your outfit.

Armpit stains

Let's be real: everyone sweats. And, unfortunately, that sweat can turn yellow when it dries, especially with white clothing. It can be tempting to toss that white shirt as soon as you notice the unsightly pit stains, but don't throw it away so fast.

Try soaking the shirt in a solution of vinegar and warm water, then treat the stains with a paste of baking soda, salt and hydrogen peroxide. When it dries, the stains will be gone, and you'll be able to wear your favorite white shirt yet again.

Stuck zippers

Jeans, dresses, jackets — we wrestle with all sorts of zippers. But a stuck zipper does not have to mean the death of your favorite look.

If your zipper does get stuck, try using soap or window cleaner to make it budge. If the teeth of the zipper have misaligned, try using a pair of pliers to move the teeth back into place.

Foundation stains

You thought getting dressed after putting on your makeup would prevent falling powder from adding an unwanted sprinkle of color to the front of your shirt. Boy, were you wrong. Instead, you now have a collar covered in foundation. Before you grab paper towel soaked in soap and water, freeze!

Don't you dare wet that stain.

First, try blotting (not rubbing) with a dry paper towel. If that doesn't work, bring out the baby powder or talcum powder.

If it's just a small stain, you can also try using White-Out. Cover the stain in the correction fluid, let it dry and then scrape it off. It works on paper — who knew it also works on fabric?

Deodorant streaks

That little black dress definitely does not look as refined with a noticeable white streak down the side. Worry not, because this one is an easy fix.

Simply use a damp washcloth or rag to remove those stubborn stains. Or, if you're feeling like trying something new, you could even use nylons or a beauty sponge to wipe those stains away.

Painful sandals

New shoes don't have to hurt. Stretch out those cute new leather sandals you just got by putting on a thick sock and walking around your house with them. That'll let the leather give and break them in for you. Bye-bye, blisters!

Here's another great trick to try:

Smelly shoes

Summer, sweat and shoes = a unavoidable smelly situation. We've all been there, but you don't have to be that person. Sprinkle the inside of your shoes with baking soda and let them sit over night. When you shake them out in the morning, the odor will be gone!

Dirty shoes

Keep your white kicks fresh. Use a Magic Eraser to get all the stains off of your sneakers. Your favorite sneakers will look brand-spanking new!

A faulty hem

Don't let a bad hem ruin a good day. Use Double Stick Tape to secure the problem until you can sew it up yourself or send it to a tailor.

Want to skip the dressing room?

Crunched for time, but need some new jeans? Wrap the denim waistline around your neck. If it comfortably meets in the back, the jeans will fit your waist. Yes, we know it sounds crazy, but people swear by it!

So next time you're in a bind, don't be afraid to wander outside of your cleaning comfort zone and try one of these simple fixes.
