It'south crunch time…. otherwise known every bit STAAR review fourth dimension!  I get asked all the time how I review for STAAR and what makes my students so successful.  Although zilch takes the identify of solid educational activity, I believe a good, solid review strategy is critical to student success.

Basics:

2. I wrap up my content a couple of weeks before the test so we have fourth dimension to review.

Use your data to determine which units or concepts need reviewing the nigh. If your students did great on a unit, I wouldn't spend much fourth dimension reviewing information technology. When I taught 8th grade, I rarely reviewed the Civil War because that content was fresh in their minds. What are my go to activities every yr?

1. Timeline Races – I honey this activity so much. Seriously, it's my favorite. Students work in small groups to put "mini-timelines" in lodge. The events in these timelines are often times not related, which leads to some great disquisitional thinking!
2. Crusade and effect cards – These are an crawly way to have students make connections.  I also beloved matching cards to chop-chop review content.
3. Jenga – You can play with set whole course, but information technology'south more fun if you lot can go multiple sets.  I recommend one fix for every four students. Enquire effectually to see if anyone would donate a game from their closet!  All yous demand to practise it number the ends of the blocks and match those numbers to a question you desire to ask.
4. Swat the STAR – I love this game for whole class review!  It'southward fun, active and sometimes LOUD! Best part, your students will be having so much fun, they won't even realize they are learning/reviewing! Win, win!
5. Bingo – this has apace become a class favorite!  I re-create the cards and laminate them ahead of time.
6. Requite a Inkling – I utilize this action all year long.  I love this activity because it is zero prep! Students pair up.  I pupil has their back to the screen and the other faces it.  The student facing the screen gives clues to their partner to try and get them to approximate the word.  After 2 minutes, they switch. It's a great mode to quickly review any content!
7. Envelope Races – In this activity, students pull terms from an envelope and describe them with the goal of getting their group to judge as many of the terms as possible before the instructor says "modify."  One time this activity is prepped, you can use it over and over!
8. Dominos – Students connect concepts and vocabulary using a version of Dominos.  I dear this game from Social Studies Success.
9. Graffiti Era tagging – I write eras on the whiteboard and divide my class into 3 or 4 teams.  I give each squad a different colored dry out erase marker. They take turns writing a discussion related to the era (people, vocabulary discussion, battle, engagement – annihilation).  I allow about five minutes for teams to write every bit much as they tin, so I say stop. We then evaluate and brand sure all items are correct. If not, we erase and discuss hwy.  It gives a peachy visual of the era when students are finished.
10. Cup Stacking Races – I review the Eras of US History with this game.  Kids love the competition!  Check these races out here for eighth and 11th.
11. Headbands – Students hold upwardly cards to their forehead which include terms/people/battles/dates (anything). Their partner or grouping members give them them clues to go them to gauge the term. It's tons of fun!
12. Unscramble the Wars – Students sort fundamental information near all of the wars we have learned throughout the year.  Can students place dates, who was president at the time, causes, key events and the furnishings of each state of war?   It'southward a great way to review in a easily-on fashion!  Looking to save time creating this easily-on activity?   eighth course Usa History and 11th Grade US History are set to print and play!

What I know nigh review games:

When kids play these games, they make connections.  They recall content (yes, they forget if they don't review) and recall critically.  Every bit a instructor, I listen CAREFULLY!
