Curriculum Overview:

Curriculum Includes:

Students work in our cute, spacious studios in the historic College of Fine Arts edifice and the Schoolhouse of Art'southward fabrication facilities.

Individual pedagogy, in-form work sessions, critiques, demonstrations, and lectures are all function of the classroom experience. Students should expect to attend nightly open studios to complete work outside of class.

Session I Courses: Weeks one-iii (3- and 6-calendar week students)

The Pre-College Art kinesthesia is comprised of accomplished artists with experience educational activity teenagers, as well as college-level undergraduates and graduates.

Small-scale form sizes allow students to benefit from individual attention, intense pedagogy, and substantial constructive feedback. Undergraduate education assistants from our School of Art's Bachelor of Fine Arts program provide back up for both instructors and students. Their presence in the classroom provides Pre-College students with the opportunity to understand the experience and commitment of an artist studying at the college level.

Concept Studios are an integral part of the art curriculum at CMU, and all undergraduate students in the School of Art are required to take a series of these courses throughout their four years of study.

During the Pre-College experience, nosotros condense these college-level courses into a rigorous ii-part (Session 1 and Session Two) introduction designed to assist students in the development of personal, not-medium-specific approaches to generating art. Areas of exploration may include:

  • systems and processes
  • contextual practice

Educational activity in Concept Studio is centered around the goal of helping students to develop work that focuses less on technique and more on the creative process itself and what artmaking tin can convey to others.

Assignments in Concept Studio will include readings, short writing projects, collaborative projects, and the completion of individual artworks.

Each Friday, students participate in constituent workshops. These forenoon and afternoon sessions nowadays introductions to a wide range of topics and skills. While attendance is required, students are not evaluated on their functioning in workshops - fostering an atmosphere of experimentation, exploration, trial and error, and freedom. Students will be prompted to sign upwards for workshops once they have enrolled in the program.

Through exploration in a diverseness of media, students develop conceptual and technical skills valuable to the college awarding process and disquisitional to success in a competitive higher-level art program.

Depending on individual levels of completion and effort, you should wait to create portfolio-quality work in each of your art courses.

All students are invited and encouraged to participate in i-on-i portfolio reviews with CMU School of Art faculty during the 3- and 6-calendar week programs. These individual reviews are informal and are 15-30 minutes in length.  This is a wonderful manner to build confidence and to practice for futurity in-person reviews when applying to college.

Eligibility & Application Requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years onetime by the program first date (to participate in the residential programme).
  • Be a current sophomore or inferior in high school at the time of application submission.
  • Have a stiff interest in art.
  • Completed online application
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Standardized test scores (optional)
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Responses to essay prompts
  • Samples of your artwork, submitted in one of the following formats (optional, simply recommended):
    • Video submission, up to 3 minutes. YouTube or Vimeo links only.
    • Five (five) to 10 images of work in a single PDF file.

Essays required for the following prompts (300-500 words each):

  • What exercise you promise to gain from participating in Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College Programs?
  • Applicants respond two of the following prompts, each with a maximum of 300 words:
    • Describe a topic, idea, or concept you discover and then engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you plough to when y'all want to learn more than?
    • Why are artists of import for society?
    • What is your definition of "fine art"? Create a top ten list based on your definition.
  • How many classes will I take?
    • Each Art educatee is enrolled in four classes per 3-week session. Classes meet Monday-Thursday. Morning time classes run from 9am-12pm and afternoon classes meet from 1pm-4pm. Core coursework is the aforementioned for all students. Student schedules are generated upon enrollment into the program.
  • What is the deviation between the 3-week program and the six-week program? How do I decide between the ii?
    • We highly recommend signing upwardly for the six-calendar week plan!
    • That said, we understand that time and financial commitments are different for anybody and will ultimately dictate whether y'all choose the iii-week or 6-calendar week plan. Nosotros divide the plan into two halves so that students leaving after the 3-week program feel that their coursework has been brought to a natural close. A celebratory exhibition and reception marker the end of our outset three weeks. The three-week option is only available during Session One (Weeks 1-3). No exceptions are ever made to this rule.
    • The primary difference between the two options is the amount of time spent in the studios and on campus. As a 6-week pupil, you will become better acquainted with campus, with the urban center of Pittsburgh, and with one another. By taking a broader array of courses, you'll develop a deeper skill set up and exist pushed further conceptually. Students enrolling in the 3-week programme will take four classes while 6-calendar week students will accept eight.
  • On average, how many hours of piece of work are assigned outside of the classroom each week?

  • How much time is spent on portfolio development?

  • What level of creative experience do I need to have to apply to Pre-Higher Fine art?
    • Most students have taken high school art classes or extracurricular art programs held inside the community. However, some students are successful with little experience given they are highly interested and motivated.
  • What kinds of supplies volition I need to bring?
    • Students will receive material kits from the CMU Art Store once they get in to campus; this is included in the plan cost. These kits are made to the specifications of the Pre-College faculty and will include items needed for individual classes such every bit Cartoon and Painting.
    • Other items non included in the cloth kit are listed below. Information technology is imperative that you purchase these earlier classes begin.
    • Students are responsible for purchasing and bringing these items:
    • All iii- and 6-week students
      1. A 500-gigabyte external hard drive for the storage of digital works such as animations and photo files
      2. A tackle box or other container for transporting art materials and tools
      3. Personal sketchbooks (works in progress or new)
      4. A large portfolio (20x30 or similar size)
      5. Documentation of previous artwork in the course of digital photo files, CD-R, thumb drive, or a personal website (for utilize during the portfolio review)
      6. A laptop figurer (with adobe creative suite) is not required but recommended
      • All 6-week students
        1. A quality digital camera with manual settings
  • What are workshops?
    • Fine art students participate in morn and afternoon workshops every Friday.
    • Workshops are unique opportunities for students to develop skills and knowledge in areas of their personal choosing. Workshop sign-ups occur during orientation weekend.
    • Students are not evaluated on participation or any artwork produced during workshops. Pre-College kinesthesia, pedagogy assistants, CMU affiliated artists, and Pittsburgh-based experts teach a wide-range of selections. Examples of past offerings include puppetry, performance art, soft sculpture, dark-green screening, kinetic sculpture, matte painting, creating an artist website, bonsai tree tending, kite-building, using a laser cutter, anatomy for artists, GIF-animation, and introduction to installation art.

Personally, I loved how the cartoon and concept studio classes guided me to experience a new body of work I had not previously experienced. I created a bully deal of solid piece of work which will do good me in future projects, portfolios, and university access throughout my life.
